Embers at the End of the Line 9 × 12 Watercolor by William Palm
“Embers at the End of the Line” was inspired by the ghost tracks at Cape May Point. The remnants of an old rail line that appear and disappear with the shifting sand. I wanted to capture the moment when the last light of day burns across the sky like embers, glowing above the surf and the weathered rails.
Painted in watercolor, the piece focuses on atmosphere, color, and the quiet drama of sunset along this historic stretch of shoreline. The warm sky, the darkened silhouettes of the dunes, and the diagonal pull of the track create a sense of movement toward the fading light, echoing the way memory and landscape intersect along the New Jersey coast.
