Hiding in the Birches: The Art of Remembering

Some of my favorite paintings begin with a simple, everyday moment. “Hiding in the Birches” was inspired by a quiet morning after I dropped my son off at school. I found myself in a nearby park, watching sunlight filter through the trees. The way the light danced across the ground, breaking into patterns of shadow and brightness, felt both fleeting and deeply peaceful.

I didn’t have a camera, so I carried the scene in my mind all day. When I sat down to paint, I realized I wasn’t interested in recreating the exact grove I’d seen. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of that morning—the sense of calm, the gentle enclosure of the trees, the beauty in a routine moment.

I chose birch trees for their unique bark and the way they break up the light. Their vertical lines create a natural rhythm, almost like a sanctuary. Painting from memory allowed me to focus on the essence rather than the details, letting the mood guide my brush.

For me, this piece is about the power of memory and the way art can transform ordinary experiences into something lasting. It’s a reminder to look for beauty in the everyday, and to trust your instincts as an artist—even if it means changing the scene to fit the story you want to tell.

I’d love to know—where do you find your moments of calm and inspiration?
