Light, Shadow, and the Atmosphere of Historic Rails

Autumn in New Jersey has a character all its own. The changing leaves, the longer shadows, and the warmth of afternoon light can transform even a familiar place into something worth stopping to look at. As a painter, I find myself drawn to these moments when light changes the way we experience a landscape.

Recently, three of my paintings, A Spot in the Woods, Autumn’s Escape, and A Warm Summer Day, were delivered for the Light and Shadow juried exhibition at Lord Stirling Park Environmental Education Center. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these works, each of which explores light and its relationship to the natural world in a different way.  Although landscapes have long been an important part of my work, I continue to explore another subject close to home: New Jersey’s railroad heritage. Historic rail lines, aging structures, and the traces of transportation systems that once connected our communities offer endless possibilities for storytelling through paint.

In my watercolor A Mirage Along the Rails, I explore the atmosphere surrounding a historic rail corridor. The tracks and structures become more than physical objects; they suggest movement, memory, and the passage of time. I’m interested in how light reveals these details and how a place can hold traces of the lives and stories that came before us.  Whether I’m painting a wooded landscape, a familiar stretch of coastline, or the remnants of an old railroad, I’m always looking for the qualities that make a place feel alive. Sometimes that comes through a dramatic contrast between light and shadow. Other times, it’s found in a quiet passage of color, a reflection, or a detail that might otherwise go unnoticed.

These are the moments that keep me returning to the easel.
